Research:

The emphasis on developing excellent research skills as a prominent goal of the five year course can be seen from the fact that each student ends up submitting over 50 project assignments and at least 8 seminar papers as part of his/her course. In addition to this many students take up other research assignments as part of various ongoing projects being conducted by the affiliated centers or other groups in college.

Analytical thinking:

The examination system is usually oriented towards testing problem solving skills and most examinations have at least a section devoted towards problem-based questions. This is often accompanied by additional classroom or take-home assignments.

Effective Communication:

There is a definite emphasis on developing effective verbal and written communication skills. Within the classroom, extensive use of the interactive mode of teaching, often with marks for classroom participation, encourages student participation. Further each project assignment tested in a viva voce examination and seminar courses require preliminary as well as final presentations. Precise legal writing is learnt up while writing projects and also honed by specific courses like Drafting and Conveyancing.

‘Lawyering’ skills:

There are compulsory clinical courses on trial and appellate advocacy and alternate dispute resolution, with mandatory simulation exercises. Active participation in moot court competitions at inter-college, national and international level has been a strong point of NLSIU. We also publish four student-run peer reviewed journals.

Leadership and Teamwork:

A thriving and active student community, with 12 distinct activity-based committees, provides the platform for students to take up diverse extra-curricular activities which allow them to gain teamwork and leadership skills. The range of activities include organizing in national mooting competitions, client counseling and negotiation events, ‘Legala’ the national level inter-collegiate literary and cultural fest, theatre festival, international parliamentary debate and seminars and conferences on contemporary issues. The student halls of residence, hostel mess and general student discipline are administered by student committees created for these specific purposes.
